This 76-second ad is for the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. It was first shown during the 2012 Super Bowl broadcast.
The video is actually a story within a story.
The first story shows how a dog has gotten overweight and unable to chase cars, not because it is too slow but because it cannot even fit through the hole in the door.
Dissatisfied with its weight and appearance in the mirror, it goes on a rigorous exercise program, going up and down the stairs, trotting on the treadmill, pulling heavy weights across the floor, exercising on a Swiss ball and most importantly, resisting the urge to eat all kinds of table scraps that fall onto the floor.
From a portly shape in the winter that can trot at best, the svelte dog now races up and down the yard in the summer. It even plunges into the swimming pool. It is now happy with its appearance in the mirror.
A car, a red 2012 Volkswagen Beetle, to be exact, races by and it leaps into action. It exits through the door hole with no problem and races alongside the car.
The video ends with a closing statement about Volkswagen.
Suddenly, the camera zooms out to reveal that the video has been playing for a crowd at a bar. A cantina, to be exact, with the Star Wars Cantina Band playing in the background.
Various customers of the Star Wars type are discussing the video and one of them indicates his preference for this video rather than the popular “Star Wars Kid” video that came out the previous year.
Suddenly, he begins choking. Across the bar, Darth Vader is applying a remote choke. After several seconds of gasping, Vader releases the choke and the man apologizes.
This humorous twist is sure to have audiences highly-amused and makes for a very memorable spot. The Volkswagen Beetle has a prominent spot, sandwiched in-between the dog and Star Wars characters.
